The 7th of June 2019 we travelled to Sao Tome. The next day we arrived at the airport and got our two rented pick up trucks. We drove to Cacau Cultural Center in the capital Sao Tome city. At the cultural centre was the “Inauguracao do Museu de Historia de Sao Tome e Principe”. Cees Lafeber and his team demonstrated a great exhibition of the history of Sao Tome e Principe. With wonderful visuals and related explanations which give outstanding impressions of the colonial time. After a long day the staff served us a lovely dinner, where we tasted local dishes. From this place we collected our dental equipment and drove to São João dos Angolares.
On Sunday we first went to the local health centre, called “Saύde”, in Agua Ize. We prepared in no time our mobile dental practice, with chairs and instruments, so that we could start with helping patients right away on Monday morning. The local doctors and nurses were really helpful. Joël, local team member, was unmissable. As interpreter and organizer, he took the lead logistic wise. The patients were overall very calm and relaxed.
From Monday until Wednesday we worked in the Saύde of Agua Ize. We started at 8am and worked until three o’clock in the afternoon. While 5-6 members took care of 60 patients, the others visited primary schools.
As told before, to minimize language difficulties we had an interpreter, Joël, who translated Portuguese to English. Joël assisted us in the dental practice, he was also kind of a teacher at the primary school. We went on a mission to give prevention classes in the primary school as well. We taught children between the ages of 7 to 11 how to wash their hands and brush their teeth properly.
On Wednesday afternoon we drove to the Monastery of Nevus. We received a very warm welcome from The Sister. We installed our equipment there, so that we could start working there efficiently on Thursday. On Thursday and Friday, we treated around 100 patients. Unfortunately, we ran out of anaesthesia and therefore we could not help everyone. 1200 carpules were not enough! This was the first time Dentistry Charity worked at the Monastery in Nevus, it was a very pleasant experience.
Friday, after a week hard work, we had given away 1300 toothbrushes (including instructions), used up more than 1200 carpules anaesthesia. And helped more than 300 patients with pain complaints. Unfortunately, there were even more patients we couldn’t help!!
