Sao Tomé 5-13 october 2018
We travelled with the six of us to Sao Tomé on the sixth of october with a lot of dental equipment, sponsored by the W.M. de Hoop foundation.
On the early morning of arrival, we got handed over our two rental cars at the airport and we drove down to Cacau Cultural Centre in Sao Tomé City. Where, as agreed, our dental equipment was stored and ready for us to put in our pick-up truck.
The same day we could drop our dental equipment at the “saud” (health centre) de Aqua Izé, where we should be working the next week. So everything was well prepared, we had good assistance and help that week.
We also had a personal local male nurse, called Roui, who helped us in the dental practice.
We were very pleased that the air-conditioning was working this year. Even at the moments of electricity failure, they immediately started their own aggregate to get the airco working as well as the Autoclaaf, to sterilize our equipment.
We were working long mornings from 9 am till 2 pm and, after lunchbreak, a short afternoon from 3 pm till 5 pm.
We have been handeling 140 patients, most people were having toothaches, so we performed a lot of extractions.
On Friday the 12th we worked in the morning, then sterilized all the equipment, counted the dental supplies and collected a box with dental extraction tools for our visit to Principe. We were only able to bring small equipment with us, because we had to travel by a little plane. The rest of our equipment we could store again at Cacau Cultural Centre.
Principe expedition 13-19 oktober 2018
We were also asked to bring a visit to Principe, the second main island of the archipelago.
It took us 45 minutes by airplane to get from Sao Tomé to Principe. We were very pleased to be able to stay in the Roça Belo Monte Hotel, a beautiful restored old plantation hotel. The Roça Belo Monte Hotel provided our rooms during our stay, which we appreciated and enjoyed very much. We were treating their local employees in one of their hotelrooms, the most luxury dental practice we have worked in so far, and we saw 35 patients.
Principe is a very small island with 8000 inhabitants. We also visited this week , all the local “sauds” and the main hospital with an employee, called Ramos provided from Hotel Belo Monte, he spoke English very well and did have a lot of connections.
He took us to the main town Santo Antonio, where we have met the director and the dentist of the hospital.
The dentist is the only one on the Island, she works in the hospital. The dental practice in the hospital has a dental unit, but it did not work for over at least half a year. We took the compressor with us to Hotel Belo Monte, a technician from the hotel made the compressor work again. So we hope next time when we are back on Principe, the unit is working and we are able to use it. We also paid a visit to other “sauds” to make contact and have a look at the location.
Some of them were to small to set up a dentist practice.
The next time we go on a mission at Principe, we can work on two spots. In the hospital, where we can make fillings and do some dental cleaning. And at the opposite of the hospital, at the other side of the river in a local “saud”, where we can check up patients and handeling the neccesary extractions.
We hope to be back next year in Principe, now we have made the neccesary contacts thanks to Ramos and we know exactly where and how we can give dentistry help.
